The Sport Day held by Ashton Secondary on Saturday started under perfect weather conditions, since the sky was overcast just enough to escape the scorching sun, which otherwise would have been our lot.

John Benjamin (teacher), who had his arm badly hurt in an incident involving by an irate member of Ashton community, was one of the organizers working hard “behind the scenes”, since he is still on sick leave. This shows pretty much the level of dedication to his work, and it is an inspiring example to the rest of the personnel, who represented the school well this Saturday at the stadium.

Besides our school staff, the sport day would have been impossible without our guests: the schools from Mosselbay (Soa Bras Secondary) and Montagu (W.A. Rossouw Primary) who brought their rugby teams along, as well as Mr. E. C. de Bruyn (Prospect Primary principal) who kindly came over to sell cones for the school as an impromptu ice-cream vendor.

To see our principal wear his rugby outfit was lots of fun, let alone to watch the team of the veterans (he was part of) play the younger under 19 generation. Relaxed on the field as much as he is in his office, Peter Buis makes a good leader, having contributed a lot to so much positive change over the last years.

I know I am a good runner, but when I was asked to join the team of veterans on the field, I suddenly remembered how much my glasses actually cost ;)
